Voor het feit dat de Senseo uitvinding een succes is, is nu bewijs geleverd. Nu.nl bericht dat de Senseo tot een verhoogde koffie consumptie in Nederland heeft geleid. Uit onderzoek van de Vereniging van Nederlandse Koffiebranders en Theepakkers blijkt dat de gemiddelde consumptie in 2004 met 2 procent is gestegen ten opzichte van 2003. Gemiddeld worden er drie kopjes koffie per dag gedronken.

Een groep van twintig bedrijven heeft het RFID Consortium opgericht, zo meldt de Automatisering Gids. Het consortium maakt zich zorgen over het grote aantal octrooien en octrooihouders op het gebied van radio frequency identification (RFID).
Dit komt onder meer doordat sommige onderdelen achter de technologieën van RFID al jarenlang bestaan. Ter voorkoming van onduidelijkheden en om het proces van de opkomst van RFID te begeleiden, is het consortium opgericht. Het consortium wil een "intellectual property (IP) licensing group" (oftewel: patent-pool) oprichten en daarmee een efficiënt octrooibeheersysteem ontwikkelen en de octrooien eenvoudiger toegankelijk maken voor fabrikanten en gebruikers van RFID.
De nalatenschap van wijlen Wim Duisenberg blijkt ook nog een IE-affairette te omvatten: European Central Bank sued over security feature in euro currency. A company that specializes in anti-counterfeiting technology claims Europe's common currency infringes on a patent obtained from a New York inventor's family.
Document Security Systems Inc. asserted in a lawsuit filed Monday in Luxembourg that all 30 billion euro bank notes in circulation infringe on a patent it acquired this year that was issued by the European Patent Office in 1999. The patent covers a method of incorporating an anti-counterfeiting feature into bank notes or similar security documents to protect against forgeries by digital scanning and copying devices. "We plan on addressing each and every instance in order to derive the maximum benefit from our intellectual properties on behalf" of shareholders, the company said. Lees hier meer (newsday.com).
Op 14 juli 2005 publiceerde de Europese Commissie het tweede rapport inzake ontwikkelingen en implicaties van octrooirecht op het gebied van bio- en gentechnologie. Op grond van artikel 16 (c) van Richtlijn 98/44/EG betreffende de rechtsbescherming van biotechnologische uitvindingen is de Commissie daartoe jaarlijks verplicht. In het rapport gaat de Commissie met name in op de vraag of voor octrooien op human gensequenties een afwijkende beschermingsomvang zou moeten gelden en op de octrooieerbaarheid van humane embryonale stamcellen.
Het rapport is beschikbaar op de website van de Europese Unie.
Het is dat we in hartje zomer 2005 leven, anders had het een goede 1-april grap geleken. Naar nu blijkt heeft Microsoft in de VS vorig jaar een octrooiaanvrage ingediend die tot doel heeft 'emoticons' te octrooieren. De aanvrage, die afgelopen donderdag gepubliceerd is, heeft betrekking op "selecting pixels to create an emoticon image, assigning a character sequence to these pixels and reconstructing the emoticon after transmission". Logischerwijs leidt de aanvrage tot de nodige protesten uit de open source gemeenschap:Mark Taylor van het Open Source Consortium: "I would have expected to see something like this suggested by one of our more immature community members as a joke on Slashdot, and probably would have chuckled at the absurdity of the notion. We now appear to be living in a world where even the most laughable paranoid fantasies about commercially controlling simple social concepts are being outdone in the real world by well-funded armies of lawyers on behalf of some of the most powerful companies on the planet,"

- Appointment of Mr. Peter Lawrence as Vice-President of the Office. He will take up his duties on 1 November 2005 on the retirement of the current Vice-President, Mr Alexander von Mühlendahl. After six years as Director of Trade Mark and Designs at the UK Patent Office, Peter was appointed as Director of Intellectual Property and Innovation in 2003. Octrooigemachtigden opgelet. De European Patent Academy, waar vorig jaar het startsein voor is gegeven, komt langzaam verder van de grond. In samenwerking met alle in de 31 lidstaten bestaande instellingen op het terrein van octrooiopleidingen en dergelijke wil deze Academie komen tot de opzet van europese standaarden op een zeker kwaliteitsniveau voor allen die betrokken -gaan- worden bij het europese patentwezen. Het Octrooicentrum (voorheen h.o.d.n. BIE) zoekt nu geïnteresseerden voor de Academic Advisory Board, die de Supervisory Board en het EOB in dit project zal bijstaan. Lees meer hier.
EZ heeft het maar druk met het IE-recht de laatste tijd. Nieuwe publicatie 'Toekomst van de elektronische communicatie' meldt o.a: "Toegangs-, auteurs- en octrooirechten, waar steeds grotere belangen mee gemoeid zijn, leiden tot steeds meer conflicten om rechten en eisen steeds meer aandacht van politici en beleidsmakers op. Er is een tendens naar ‘juridisering’. Moet de politiek gehoor geven aan de roep (van sommige bedrijven) om meer rechten, of juist aan de stemmen van anderen (inclusief bedrijven) die roepen dat de ‘juridisering’ veel te ver gaat? Moeten rechten strenger gehandhaafd worden, of kunnen activiteiten zoals peer tot peer uitwisseling beter worden gedoogd?" Lees hele verhaal hier.
